i know it seems silly to write about a sandwich, but it’s a good sandwich.
we used the car a couple weekends ago to shop outside philly. this was an unnecessary trip that i’m a little embarrassed about. there was a boden warehouse sale north of philly. i thought: we’ll buy lots of inexpensive summer clothes and be done with it and then stop for philly cheesesteaks as a bonus!
so the boden event was so-so. we got there around 12:30 pm (starving). we shopped first, but it was already picked over. the kids were troopers, subjected to mommy’s whim to shop (this is a very rare thing). the kids didn’t know what to do when we got there. they stared at the piles of clothing on the table. i said: start digging, girls, and find your size. my husband and gr3 were on their own. in the end, we came away with a few things, but nothing to write home about. we left hungrier and in search of a food memory: Steve’s Prince of Steaks.
the last time we had steve’s prince of steaks was 2002. gr1 was a newborn in the backseat of the car we rented to go shopping at franklin mills with my parents when they came to meet gr1 (my mom was a shopper). someone at the mall told us about it and we had it for dinner in the car while gr1 was sleeping.
this time we were going to relive it’s philly cheesesteak goodness. we went to the one on comly road. it was a simple place–high stools and a long counter. gr3 liked the neon signage. gr1 and i ordered the same thing–steak with provolone. my husband had steak and provolone too with mushrooms and onions. gr2 and gr3 opted for hotdogs. we had cheese fries and root beer. it was really a lot of food. the hot dogs were huge. i ate my whole cheesesteak! gr1 had a third of it and saved it. it wasn’t quite as good as my memory of it from a long time ago, but it was still pretty darn good.
gr1 had a sleepover at a friend’s that night and my husband ate her leftover sandwich. when gr1 came home the next day she was devastated when she found out her daddy ate it. lesson learned: put your name on your leftovers!
thank you steve’s prince of steaks. don’t go changing. we’ll be back.
